Hair Loss Remedies in History

hair From the times immemorial, people have struggled to find a cure for hair loss. In this article, we offer an outline of some of the most popular historic hair loss remedies in different regions of the world.

In ancient Egypt, people believed that lettuce leaves, associated with the god of virility Min, were very beneficial for hair growth. They applied patches of chopped lettuce on bald scalp spots in a hope to grow new healthy hair. Another miraculous hair loss remedy featured a Fir Tree extract that was included in various infusions and hair oils. The Egyptians massaged them into their scalps and hair. Castor oil was also popular to encourage the growth of hair, especially in mixture with almond oil that added nice fragrance and smoothness to the final product. For those hopelessly bald, ancient Egyptian artisans were making beautiful wings and hair extensions from natural human hair and… sheep’s wool!

In India, people have always believed that thick and healthy hair is the best decoration to emphasise the natural beauty of a person. In the teachings of Ayurveda, a thousands year old medical science of India, sage, black pepper, fenugreek, alma oil, and coconut were considered the best remedies against hair loss. Sage leaves were usually boiled, mixed with coconut oil, and massaged into the scalp and hair to restore the natural pigmentation and stimulate hair growth. Black pepper and finely ground fenugreek were mixed with coconut milk for topical applications. Alma oil, derived from wild Indian gooseberries, was boiled in a coconut preparation and used in a cooled form to boost the growth of hair and rejuvenate the skin of the scalp.

The Amazon Indians used to treat their hair with a heated banana extract, while in Victorian America hair loss conditions were medicated by regular overnight applications of a camphor, cologne and cantharides spirit tincture or a mixture of cantharides with Jamaica rum and rosemary oil. The most prescribed hair care procedures in historic Europe featured vigorous brushing of hair with a stiff brush, scalp massages with natural oils, and a diet emphasising organ meats, lard, and butter.

    Dear Rafa,

Unfortunately, hair greying is a natural process that hits us all as we age. However, there are several tricks that can be used in order to restore the natural pigmentation of hair. Apart from natural and synthetic hair dyes, you can try applications of Copper Peptide - there are a number of anecdotal evidences that claim that Copper Peptide is able to restore the natural color of greying hair.
