Myths about Hair Loss

Dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos says, “Disease, genetic predisposition and even poor cosmetic grooming practices all cause hair loss. Even simple changes in your hair care routine can result in healthier hair.” Millions of people are affected by hair loss and although it doesn’t bring any danger into a person’s life, for many it is emotional stress.

Let’s talk about the common myths of hair loss. Several things are doubtful and depending on the souce of information you can get various opinions about these myths.

Myth 1. Dandruff’s influence on hair loss. While some people believe dandruff is the first sign of the coming baldness, the others don’t agree, saying, it is a common thing even for children who are usually very far from the period of baldness.

Dandruff is a common thing that can affect anybody. It is a fungus (malazzesia globosa), which flies in the air, therefore cannot be completely cured. But it can be and needs to be treated to stop the excessive flaking.

Usually dandruff causes itching and according to the studies 90minutes of constant scratching by fingernails or any other sharp objects causes the hair cuticle damage or removes the protective coating on the hair strands making them weaker.

The treatment of the fungus can be done by the shampoos found in any health and beauty stores. The best anti-dandruff cosmetics contain zinc pyrithione which covers the scalp with the thin healing layer preventing fungus from growing. As long as the medicine works, the hair is protected from dandruff and the itching feeling, caused by it.

Myth 2. Prescription shampoos. While of group of people thinks everything advised by a doctor can heal, the others believe prescription shampoos are too harsh, so while treating the skin they ruin hair causing baldness.

Unfortunately many were mislead by the idea of “bad” prescription shampoos, preferring to live with itching scalp and dandruff to the hair cosmetics with “strong chemicals”. The science makes steps forward every day developing better cures and more helpful medicines. The prescription anti-dandruff shampoos don’t only contain the necessary medicine, but improve the hair in cosmetic sense as the store shampoos do.

Myth 3. Blow drying hair. Women that wash their hair every morning don’t know any other way of drying their hair except for blow drying. For most of them it is a good and easy way of increasing the volume and styling the hair.

There are some facts a person should know before buying a hair blower. When the heat is applied to wet hair it makes the strands even more fragile than they used to be. Moreover the water that remained in the strands starts to boil ruining both the strands and the cuticles.

The volume caused by blow drying is temporary and unhealthy too. Hair strands are made out of little pieces that stick together. When the hot air is applied the pieces stick out like fish scales. This effect causes hair damage as well.

Blow drying goes together with combing which should be postponed because wet hair is more vulnerable and elastic than dry hair.
