Hair Loss Organizations
Almost every person comes across hair loss at some point of life. It can be temporary or permanent. It is a true fact that two thirds of all men suffer hair loss (mostly androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness) by the age of 35. While this is more recognized as a male problem, 40% of all hair loss sufferers are women.
There are several organizations which work on researches and educate people about hair loss. The main one in North America is the American Hair Loss Association. According to the official site, www.americanhairloss.org, it is “committed to educating and improving the lives of all those affected by hair loss”. The change in hair condition usually affects different aspects of person’s life, so the AHLA is trying to do its best to find cures by holding researches, to make people feel better and fight hair loss with success by educating them on the topic, and to “legitimize hair loss in all forms in the eyes of our society as a whole”.
As the main organization on this problem, American Hair Loss Association recognizes several other groups as non-profit or customer organizations that deal with hair loss.
First of all it is The Bald Truth, a radio program that airs from CBS. Its host, Spencer Kobren, helps those who primarily suffer from hair loss on the emotional level. The program tells daily how men and women all over the country cope with social difficulties brought by hair loss. It also educates on various types of hair loss, gives overviews of hair loss products and treatments, and helps to comfort those who are desperate. The Bald Truth has been on for over 8 years and it has helped a lot of people who lose or have lost hair. The official website of the program is www.thebaldtruth.com.
The American Academy of Dermatology is concerned about any type of skin problems. While it deals with a broad field of health issues, the AHLA recognizes it too, because the Academy has a great number of hair loss specialists in the membership. This organization educates about hair loss, helps with its treatments and supports the researches.
The National Alopecia Areata Foundation works with the most mysterious type of hair loss. There are several beliefs as to the origin of alopecia areata, but none of them has been completely approved. The Foundation was established to support those who suffer from alopecia areata, to find the cure for it and to educate people about this type of hair problem. At the official website, www.naaf.com has set its goals like this:
• Funding research and research workshops that add to the scientific knowledge about alopecia areata, its causes, and different treatments.
• Providing local support and education for people with alopecia areata and their families.
• Informing the public about alopecia areata.
• Advocating the concerns of people affected alopecia areata.
• Creating and distributing educational materials to health professionals as well as those affected, so that all may better understand alopecia areata.
There is also the Children Alopecia Project that specializes on hair loss in children. This organization raises money, makes donations, and arranges support groups for children who have any type of alopecia. Along with the above mentioned organizations, the Children Alopecia Project promotes public awareness about the problem. More details on it can be found at www.childrensalopeciaproject.com.
Many people lose their hair after chemotherapy. However, this can be prevented with the help of special cold caps, say the founders of the Rapunzel Project. This non-profit organization is dedicated to help chemotherapy patients keep their hair during and after the treatment. By raising necessary money and educating patients Rapunzel Projects wants to decrease this type of hair loss to minimum. The official site of the organization is www.rapunzelproject.org.
